Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
