Historic Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

However the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
