On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
