At least thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
